Long-term effects of Gabriel Landeskog’s knee cartilage transplant are hard to predict due to rarity of surgery among professional athletes, experts say

Long-term effects of Gabriel Landeskog’s knee cartilage transplant are hard to predict due to rarity of surgery among professional athletes, experts say When Dr. Rachel Frank explains cartilage transplantation to her patients, she tells them the purpose is to improve their quality of life by reducing pain in the damaged area and improving function.By that token, the surgery Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog underwent Wednesday is “incredibly successful in the vast majority of patients,” said Frank, an orthopedic surgeon and Colorado Rapids team physician who specializes in cartilage and joint restoration. The $42 million question in the Avalanche’s case is whether Landeskog’s surgery can be effective with a more ambitious end goal.“For an elite athlete or professional athlete, the definition of success is certainly going to include those things,” Frank said, “but also includes the ability to get back to playing that sport at that (elite) level.”Landeskog is among the most elite competitors in his sport when healthy. But the Avs wing has been combating an injury to the cartilage in hi...

Grading the Week: Is Kevin Durant starting to slip? Or is Aaron Gordon really that good?

Grading the Week: Is Kevin Durant starting to slip? Or is Aaron Gordon really that good? There are a few ways to view Kevin Durant’s shockingly ordinary performance against the Nuggets over their recently concluded playoff series. The first, and most accessible, is to conclude that the Phoenix Suns superstar and one-time NBA MVP is no longer the unstoppable bucket-getter he once was. A second, and more satisfying verdict for the Grading the Week staff, is that Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon is really that good.Aaron Gordon — A+How quickly opinions change when a player actually gets to focus on the things they are good at.It wasn’t all that long ago that Gordon and teammate Will Barton were the primary scapegoats in a disappointing 4-1 series loss to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of last year’s NBA playoffs.Thrust into a No. 2 role alongside two-time MVP Nikola Jokic with Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. sidelined, Gordon often looked lost while attempting to carry a load that was never meant for him. But with Murray and Porter back...

Curry, Green say this isn’t the Warriors’ “Last Dance” despite loss to Lakers

Curry, Green say this isn’t the Warriors’ “Last Dance” despite loss to Lakers LOS ANGELES — Steph Curry refused to believe it was over until the math just didn’t add up. After all he’s done on the playoff stage, how could you blame him?Rui Hachimura had just eased past him into a layup to put the Lakers up 23 points with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of Game 6. Curry kept pushing — at too many points in his career, he’s defied odds and won momentous games with little hope remaining. But reality overcame rational cockiness. He and his teammates who’ve won four titles together had fallen into unfamiliar territory: Out of the playoffs before the Finals for the first time since 2014, the year of a first-round loss that taught Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson how to win together.“Our worst season since 2014 and we still had a chance to make a run,” Green said. The Warriors’ Big Three won’t count the dismal 2020 (worst record in league) or 2021 (knocked out in play-in) seasons because they weren’t c...

Bouie: Clarence Thomas can’t undermine Supreme Court legitimacy fast enough

Bouie: Clarence Thomas can’t undermine Supreme Court legitimacy fast enough For Republicans, the investigations into Clarence Thomas and his friendship with Harlan Crow, a Texas billionaire, are just pretexts for an attack on the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.“This assault on Justice Thomas is well beyond ethics,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week on Supreme Court ethics reform. “It’s about trying to delegitimize a conservative court that was appointed through the traditional process.”For their part, Democrats do not seem eager to attack or undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. Just a handful of Democrats in the House of Representatives called for Thomas’ resignation after reports that he accepted lavish trips and gifts from Crow, and Senate Democrats have been careful with the issue. There’s no indication that Democrats have the votes to pass anything like a meaningful Supreme Court ethics law. What’s more, Democrats still speak as if they hold the Supreme Court in high esteem. Ask Amy: My husband refused to confiscate this big shot’s handicap placard

Ask Amy: My husband refused to confiscate this big shot’s handicap placard Dear Amy: I have been happily married for 39 years. The few “disagreements” we’ve had always seem to center around my husband’s family. The latest has to do with my brother-in-law. He has always had a very entitled attitude. When my mother-in-law passed away in 2020, the car she recently bought was taken over by him. I was fine with that. However, she also had a handicap parking permit that was issued to her by the state of New York due to her deteriorating health issues. My husband’s brother has chosen to use that permit illegally for the past two years.I have always suspected the fraud but didn’t want to accuse him and cause problems in the event that he had gotten his own permit. This past week he left the area to visit another relative, and his car was left in our driveway while he was away. After checking the tag through the window, I confirmed that he has been illegally using my mother-in-law’s handicap permit tag. This left me furious.Related ArticlesAdvice | Ask Amy: No...

Debt ceiling standoff shows how era of pandemic spending is giving way to focus on stemming deficits WASHINGTON (AP) — One outcome is clear as Washington reaches for a budget deal to end the debt ceiling standoff: The ambitious COVID-19 era of government spending to cope with the pandemic and rebuild in its aftermath is giving way to a new fiscal focus on tailored investments and stemming deficits.President Joe Biden has said recouping unspent coronavirus money is “on the table” in budget talks with Congress. While the White House has threatened to veto Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s debt ceiling bill with its “devastating cuts” to federal programs, the administration has signaled a willingness to consider other budget caps. The end result is a turnaround from just a few years ago, when Congress passed and then-president Donald Trump signed the historic $2.2 trillion CARES Act at the start of the public health crisis in 2020. It’s a dramatic realignment even as Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law and Inflation Reduction Act are now investing billions of dollars into pav...
