ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — More than 100 people who died in Nigeria in 2020 during protests against police brutality will soon be buried, authorities said, prompting allegations by activists on Monday of a cover-up and calls for a new investigation. At least 103 bodies were gathered from across the state after the protests and other clashes related to it, the top official at Lagos State’s ministry of health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, said in a statement after local media reported a leaked memo about the planned burial.Ogboye said the fatalities occurred during violence in many parts of the state and not at a protest site at the Lekki toll gate, where soldiers allegedly shot protesters. The new information about the deaths shows authorities in the West African nation are still covering up the true casualty toll from the protest and are still protecting security personnel who killed protesters, Amnesty International’s Nigeria office said as it demanded a new probe into the killings.“M...MN urges Medical Assistance recipients to complete eligibility check

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (20 July) reshuffled his ministers for key domestic portfolios such as education, housing and urban affairs, as his government begins its response to riots that shook the country three weeks ago.Macron has struggled to relaunch his second term in office, which has been plagued by domestic crises including months of protests over pension reform as well as the five days of riots over the police killing of a teenager of Algerian and Moroccan descent at a traffic stop. The most high-profile change was at the education ministry, where Pap Ndiaye, a Black studies university expert who had become a target of right-wing, conservative attacks, was replaced by budget minister Gabriel Attal, 34.Attal, a rising star among Macronistas, became France's youngest cabinet member at 29 when he joined government in 2018. He gained a reputation as a quick-witted, politically astute loyalist as government spokesman, before being appointed to the powerful budge...Word Game: July 24, 2023

Dear Amy: My live-in boyfriend is a low-level pot dealer.Honestly, this has always bothered me, but he says that now that pot is legal in our state, he is no longer breaking the law, but running a business.I basically hate the fact that he does this. It brings losers into our home at odd hours, and I have at times felt unsafe.I guess I’m writing to you because I’d like a gut check. I value your point of view and could use another perspective. So – what do you think?TiredDear Tired: In my state (where consuming pot is now legal), individuals can grow a small number of plants for their own use, but it is still illegal to possess more than three ounces and to sell it outside of a legitimate and licensed business. You should do some research into the web of laws and regulations where you live in order to understand (better than your boyfriend does) the extent to which he is breaking the law.More important, in my mind, is the atmosphere this creates in your home, and how vulnerable you are...Harriette Cole: I’m tempted to follow my friend’s lead in fixing my boring life

The gap is closing at the Women’s World Cup as the underdogs rise up

SYDNEY (AP) — The underdogs are rising up at the Women’s World Cup.Jamaica’s 0-0 draw with one of the tournament favorites in France on Sunday was the latest evidence the gap is closing in international soccer. There were enough examples of that during the men’s World Cup in Qatar last year with Saudi Arabia beating eventual champion Argentina, while Morocco became the first African team to advance to the semifinals.“Smaller countries are getting that understanding. We might not have the resources the bigger countries do in terms of equipment and traveling and games, but I think there’s an understanding there with coaches and technical staff and everything that our preparation is a little bit better all around,” Jamaica coach Lorne Donaldson said.“Once upon a time the U.S. by far was very, very dominant and you can just see the gap is closing. I think the smaller nations are jumping on the bandwagon and saying, ‘We can do this too.’”France coach Hervé Renard, who le...Latest news
