Authorities are investigating a single car crash that killed a 19-year-old Lynn man on Route 128 in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Tuesday.Preliminary findings suggest the driver of the car, a 2009 Honda Civic, “veered off the road to the right and rolled into the wood line,” Massachusetts State Police Spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.Emergency personnel declared the 19-year-old dead after arriving on scene at mile marker 51 on Route 128 north around 7:20 a.m. A second occupant, a 26-year-old man from Florida, was taken via medical helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment of what Procopio called “life-threatening injuries.”In an update Tuesday evening, Procopio said it is believed that the second occupant resides in Lynn though he has a Florida address. The early morning crash closed both sides of Route 128 to allow Medflight to land and transport the surviving victim before the scene cleared around 9 a.m.The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusett...Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defends use of lights and sirens in police escort crash

Two weeks after her police escort crossed on a red light and collided with another vehicle, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said it was “standard practice” for emergency lights and sirens to be activated when transporting dignitaries through traffic.Wu said video footage provided to her office shows that the Boston police officer, Keyanna Smith, came to a complete stop at the intersection prior to going through the red light, and followed department protocols “as laid out for the use of sirens.”While she feels elected officials should have to experience the same everyday inconveniences as residents, Wu said it’s “fairly standard practice” for the dignitary protection team “to activate lights and sirens to move through traffic smoothly when getting to a destination.”“Everyone else is stuck in traffic and that is something that is unusual and I think should and is used sparingly, but the reality of being mayor and one of the unique parts of this job is I do have to get all around the city in...OceanGate Expeditions Titanic sub is steered with a video game controller: ‘MacGyvery’

The missing OceanGate Expeditions five-person small sub that explores the Titanic wreck site is steered with a video game controller, only has one button, does not have a GPS, and has not been approved by any regulatory body. The custom built 21-foot submersible has some “MacGyvery” elements, according to a reporter who recently gave viewers a look inside the 5-inch thick carbon fiber sub.The U.S. Coast Guard out of Boston is now searching for the five people on the missing Titanic expedition sub, about 900 miles off of Cape Cod. The vessel has about 96 hours of oxygen, and that oxygen is expected to run out on Thursday.A few months ago, CBS News’ David Pogue went inside OceanGate Expeditions’ Titan sub to view the remains of the Titanic.“If all went well, I myself would be spending about 12 hours sealed inside on a dive to the Titanic,” Pogue said in the report. “Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous.”The reporter went over the waiver:...Boston Coast Guard races against 96-hour oxygen supply deadline to find Titanic expedition sub

The U.S. Coast Guard crew from Boston continues to search for the five people on the missing Titanic expedition sub, as they race against the 96-hour oxygen supply deadline to find the submersible about 900 miles off of Cape Cod.The Coast Guard has until about Thursday morning before that oxygen supply will be up for the five people on board the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince. The five-person crew on the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince submerged Sunday morning, and the crew lost contact about 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive. The OceanGate Expeditions sub has a 96-hour oxygen supply if there’s an emergency on board.“We know there’s about 40 hours of breathable air left,” Capt. Jamie Frederick, of the First Coast Guard District, said during a Tuesday early afternoon press conference from the Coast Guard Base Boston.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the crew and the families and the loved ones,” he said. “We will ...Boston City Council will hold hearing after four kids found with corpse and sex toys

Adam Duvall has overcome plenty of adversity in his career. The Red Sox outfielder was an 11th-round draft pick who grinded for six years before establishing himself as a big league regular. He’s been traded, non-tendered and in recent years has worked his way back from a pair of major wrist injuries.Yet none of that compares to the daily battle he’s been fighting for more than 11 years, and which he’ll continue to fight for the rest of his life.Duvall was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2012, and at the time he was entering his third season of professional baseball as a 23-year-old in the San Francisco Giants organization. Duvall said in retrospect there had been signs and symptoms much earlier, but receiving the news was life-changing and added a completely new dimension to his transition to High-A ball.“I had to learn on the fly. I got diagnosed during spring training so I had to learn how to manage it during the season,” Duvall said. “That wa...Brian Cashman talks Yankees’ struggles, Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe and more after Red Sox sweep

With the Yankees on a four-game losing streak — including three ugly losses in Boston — Brian Cashman addressed his team’s struggles for the second time this season before Tuesday’s series-opener against the Mariners. The Yankees began the day a half-game out of fourth place in the American League East, and their offense had failed to score more than three runs in eight of their last 11 games. The Bombers went 3-8 over that stretch despite playing the sub-.500 White Sox and Mets and the last-place Red Sox.On Sunday, hitting coach Dillon Lawson talked about the individual and overall offensive issues plaguing the Yankees. Cashman followed that up by expressing confidence in high-paid, scuffling veterans like DJ LeMahieu, Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson.“I guess it’s individual for a lot of guys,” the general manager said. “Some of them are coming back from the IL and trying to find their groove again, like Stanton and...Barona brush fire prompts evacuation warnings

HONOLULU (AP) — The nearly two-week eruption of a Hawaii volcano, one of the most active in the world, has come to a pause, scientists said. After a three-month hiatus, Kilauea began erupting again June 7 — displaying fountains of glowing red lava without threatening any communities or structures.Crowds of people flocked to the Big Island’s Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which offered safe views of the lava. Scientists declared the eruption paused again Monday when it rapidly declined in the afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. Still, some lava continues to flow on the crater floor, which may continue for days as the lava cools, the observatory said, adding that scientists will continue to monitor the volcano. On Tuesday afternoon, only small, faint pockets of red could be seen on the USGS livestream that showed bright bursts of lava on the eruption’s first day. The previous night, park rangers could still see lava through crac...Latest news
